Quick and Easy Scarves
Check out this collection of my favorite free and easy crochet scarf patterns. This list of crochet scarves has something for everyone, so you're sure to find your new favorite pattern!
Easy Crochet Patterns for Beginners
When beginners ask me what they should make for their first crochet project, I often recommend making a simple scarf. Since most scarves are shaped like long rectangles, they're a great way to practice the basic crochet stitches without worrying about advanced shaping techniques.
In the list below, I've collected my favorite free, easy crochet scarf patterns, all chosen with the beginner in mind. Each of these patterns has detailed instructions and plenty of photos to guide you through each step, from start to finish.
Here's my favorite crochet scarf pattern to recommend to beginners. It's a simple and easy ribbed scarf pattern that will teach you all the basics of scarf-making.
These patterns aren't just for newbies, though! Intermediate and experienced crocheters will love these patterns to make quick gifts and charity projects.
How to Crochet a Scarf
A scarf is the perfect beginner project to practice your new crochet skills. Here are the basic steps to making a crochet scarf :
- Gather supplies, including yarn and a crochet hook.
- Make a slip knot and the first foundation row of chain stitches.
- Make the first row, following the pattern.
- Continue makes rows of stitches until the scarf is as long as you like.
- Finish the scarf by cutting the yarn, pulling it through the last loop, and weaving in the ends.
Best Yarn for Scarves
You can use all sorts of yarn to make crochet scarves – it's really up to you! Here are some options:
- Acrylic yarn is soft, widely available, and inexpensive.
- Acrylic/wool blends have the warmth of wool with the easy care of acrylic yarn.
- Wool yarn can be gorgeous, if a little more expensive. I like this superwash merino yarn because it's super soft and machine washable.
If you are a beginner, I recommend a worsted weight or thicker yarn with a smooth texture. Choose a light color so it's easier to see your stitches.
And remember, crochet scarves made with fingering weight yarn will take longer to complete than scarves made with bulky or suer-bulky weight yarn.
How many skeins of yarn do you need to crochet a scarf?
The amount of yarn you need to crochet a scarf will vary based on the pattern and the yarn itself. In most cases, you'll need about two balls or skeins of yarn to make a scarf. Be sure to read your particular pattern or yarn label for more information.
Best Crochet Stitches for Scarves
Some crochet stitches are better suited to scarves than others. Dense stitches will keep your neck warmer than lacy, open stitches.
- Single crochet or double crochet are basic crochet stitches that make a close dense fabric.
- Back-loop half double crochet creates a ribbed fabric that looks great made into a scarf.
- Moss stitch, also called granite or linen stitch, creates a closed fabric with a beautiful drape.
- V-stitch creates a fabric that's a little lighter and open, so it's great for warmer-weather scarves.
- Waffle stitch makes a textured fabric that stitches up into a thick, warm scarf.
Crochet Scarf Sizes
There's no hard-and-fast rule of how long or wide a crochet scarf should be. It's up to you and the pattern designer to create a scarf that expresses your unique personal style.
How wide should a scarf be?
Skinny scarves measure 4″ wide, traditional scarves measure 8″ wide, and super-wide blanket scarves measure up to 12″ wide. You can even make blanket scarves, which range between 15-30″ wide.
How many chains do you need for a scarf?
The number of chains you need for a scarf depends on how wide you want the scarf to be and your gauge (ie, stitches per inch). For example, if you are crocheting with super-bulky yarn, you may have a gauge of 6 stitches per 4″. If you want your scarf to be 8″ wide, you'll want to start with a chain of 12 stitches, plus your turning chain/s.
How long should a scarf be?
On average, scarves range from 60″ to 72″ long. That said, you can make a scarf longer if you want to wrap them around the neck more than once.
How long should fringe be on a scarf?
The length of fringe varies according to your preference. In general, scarf fringe ranges from 4″ to 6″ long.
